The first book to document the progress of the Make It Right Foundation‚ efforts to rebuild in New Orleans‚ Lower 9th Ward after Hurricane Katrina is now available.  With contributions by founder Brad Pitt and designs for the green, affordable cutting-edge Make It Right homes

Make It Right was launched by actor Brad Pitt, architecture firms Graft and McDonough + Partners and Cherokee Gives Back in 2007, two years after the storm, when the neighborhood was still deserted and devastated. The founders invited a group of high-profile and influential New Orleans, national and international architects to develop affordable, green, storm resistant housing for the community, incorporating the latest in innovative and sustainable design.

This book which was sponsored and assembled by Graft, features essays on the history and people of the Lower 9th Ward, the hurricane and its impact, and tracks the development and progress of the Make It Right project.  But the primary focus of the book is on the design process and designs.  The contributions to the project from Adjaye Associates, GRAFT, Gehry Partners and Shigeru Ban, among others, are shown in numerous photographs and renderings with sketches, building plans, and informative commentary. The book also describes the sustainable Cradle to CradleSM approach, which seeks to maximize economic, ecological, and social value by following principles inspired by nature.

Architecture in Times of Need also makes it clear that the devastation caused by Katrina and delay in rebuilding created an opportunity and demand for innovation. The Make It Right designs for green affordable homes were created for New Orleans. Lower 9th Ward, but they could be replicated around the world.  At a time when energy costs are too high, supplies are uncertain and concern about climate change is mounting, these homes offer the kind of practical, accessible design and technological solutions communities around the globe are demanding.

A delightful collection of creatures that adorn New York City buildings. Companion to “Faces in Stone”, this is a gift-sized and attractively priced book for architecture buffs. It features more than one hundred imaginative sculptural details, from the domestic to the fantastic, with a brief introduction and contextual photos to show the building on which each ornament appears, the addresses, and transportation information.

Reviews

“Implicitly, King makes a case against the rigid application of modernist dogma to architecture. That the carvings he photographed added depth, visual interest and beauty to their structures was sufficient justification for their existence. Form doesn’t necessarily have to follow function.” — Dave Luhrssen, Milwaukee Express

“[E]xcellent books, giving you another way to enjoy the sights, and great presents for architectural students or lovers of New York City.” — Pam Robinson, Examiner.com

Similar books could be produced in any older city with many buildings that have survived the ravages of “urban renewal.” But photographer Robert Arthur King, a professor at the New York School of Interior Design, didn’t have to wander far from home to find his subject in the decorative stone carvings on the facades of buildings. King focused on black and white photographs of animal figures—Art Deco eagles, sinister goats, roaring lions, glowering owls—mostly carved by anonymous artisans of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Implicitly, King makes a case against the rigid application of modernist dogma to architecture. That the carvings he photographed added depth, visual interest and beauty to their structures was sufficient justification for their existence. Form doesn’t necessarily have to follow function. Around the globe the importance of infrastructure as the motor of economic development is rising owing to increasing mobility and the need to make urban territories accessible. As a result, infrastructure networks are among the most complex and significant design tasks today.

This book investigates how the design of infrastructure actively influences the organization of the inhabited landscape. Works of infrastructure are analyzed as footprints of civilization, as physical presence, as transformers of perception, and as new vessels of collective life. The authors identify these characteristics, together with the conditions that influence them, and suggest a typology of design attitudes as revealed in recent practice around the world.

Each chapter is illustrated with key works by some of the world’s most inspiring designers, including Vito Acconci, Paul Andreu, Benthem Crouwel, Dietmar Feichtinger, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Terry Farrell, Norman Foster, Nicholas Grimshaw, Antoine Grumbach, Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki, Bruno Mader, Maxwan, Montgomery Sisam, OMA, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, UN Studio, and Zwarts & Jansma.

The authors demonstrate how the combined creative potential of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design is essential to putting into place an efficient, modern infrastructure. The result is an indispensable instrument for everyone involved in the design of infrastructure, and for all observers of the contemporary city.

A comprehensive and eloquent argument for “new traditional” architecture that preserves the style and character of historic buildings.

With contemporary design being redefined by architects and urbanists who are recovering the historic language associated with traditional architecture and the city, how might preservation change its focus or update its mission? Steven W. Semes makes a persuasive case that context matters and that new buildings and additions to old buildings should be harmonious with their neighbors.

Endorsements & Reviews
“I do not think I've ever come away from a book more impressed. Its erudition and its force in putting across a complex contrarian argument are incomparable. This book should be required reading for modern architects, who will start to whistle past the graveyard, and preservationists, who will see the error of their ways and, if they are honest, will admit it.... All I can say is read the review - or better yet, go out right now and get the book itself. It is my new bible.” — David Brussat, Architecture Here and There, The Providence Journal

“The Decade’s Most Important Book on Urban Architecture….With the publication of this volume, Steven Semes has vaulted into the first rank of contemporary architectural critics and preservation theorists….Semes provides sufficient intellectual gravitas for his opus to be a valuable textbook when teaching historic preservation and urbanism. But the book’s clarity and precision also make it a practical guide for urban planners, developers and designers tasked with creating additions or infill for historic areas. It also should be must reading for all preservationists and people serving on landmark commissions and design review boards.” — Clem Labine, Traditional Building

“[P]resents a persuasive case against the preservation ethic of oppositional styling; that is, the argument that new additions to historic buildings must be deliberately un-period so as not to be confused with the existing, ‘authentic’ section of the building. Semes illuminates the error of this way of thinking, and walks us through a history of architecture and preservation in the process.” — Planetizen.com

“[A] stirring and passionate call to get historic preservation right by respecting the past without making it sacrosanct.” — Civil Engineering

“Semes has written an indictment so complete and so damning, and yet expressed with such grace and diplomacy, that all thoughtful preservationists and even some modern architects will finally understand, if not admit, the error of their ways….so clear, so strong and so compelling that professionals in the field may be judges by how they react to it.” — David Brussat, The Providence Journal

“Full of well illustrated examples, drawings, and photographs of the results of both approaches, this volume is likely to take up important space in future discussions.” — Book News

In 1963 at the University of Cambridge, Peter Eisenman - world famous for his Holocaust Memorial in Berlin (2005) and respected and feared by his colleagues for his intellectual acuity and quick-wittedness - wrote a dissertation on the formal basis of modern architecture. In it, the architect confronts historicism with theory and the analysis of form, whose distinguishing features he regards as the foundation of architectural composition. Eisenman illustrates his observations with numerous, extremely precise hand drawings.

This striking document, with its idiosyncratic photographs, fully deserves to be published here, for the first time, in a beautiful reproduction of the original, on sweet cream paper, in gorgeous period type, sometimes slightly smudged. In an afterword, Peter Eisenman discusses this remarkable starting point of his practical and theoretical work, concluding that the value of a Ph.D to an architect lies in "learning how to sit still for three years."

Emergence is one of the most exciting new fields in architecture today, gaining interest from not only academics and students but also leading professionals, with directors from Fosters, Arup and Bentley Systems all attending the most recent symposium on the subject at the Architects Association, London.

As a concept, Emergence has captured the zeitgeist, embodying the pervasive cultural interest in genetics and biological sciences. In the sciences, Emergence is an explanation of how natural systems have evolved and maintained themselves, and it has also been applied to artificial intelligence, information systems, economics and climate studies. The potential of the mathematics of Emergence that underlie the complex systems of nature is now being realised by engineers and architects for the production of complex architectural forms and effects, in advanced manufacturing of ‘smart’ materials and processes, and in the innovative designs of active structures and responsive environments.
  • The first book to provide a detailed exploration of the architectural and engineering consequences of this paradigm, and a detailed analysis of geometries, processes and systems to be incorporated into new methods of working.
  • Sets out a new model of ‘Metabolism’ that uses natural systems and processes as a model far beyond the minimising environmental strategies of ‘sustainability’.
Human forms and culture evolved over a period of extreme fluctuations in the climate and consequential rapid variations in ecologies; a regime of natural selection that conserved and enhanced the ability to adapt their culture to a variety of climates and ecological conditions. Culture acts to transmit complex social and ecologically contextualised information down through the generations, and has tended to increase in complexity over time, a process that began over 130,000 years ago in East Africa with the emergence of anatomically modern humans, the diaspora 'out of Africa' and the spread of humans across the world.

By 35,000 years ago, long-term settlements, complex spoken language, calendars and the material archiving of ecological information had emerged. Humans began to modify their local ecological systems about the same time, as the extinction of the megafauna and the use of fi re to drive game and clear land produced changes in patterns of vegetation in steppe grasslands, in cool forests and in warmer grasslands. As the energetic returns from hunting were reduced, the increase in the gathering of grains initiated the genetic changes that over many thousands of years led to the domestication of wild cereals.

Excavated dwellings, or 'pit houses', provided a fixed residential location for the winter months and enabled them to regulate their collective metabolism in a great range of climates, and to expand into the very cold territories of the high northern latitudes. In the other seasons, tents and temporary structures were occupied in ecologically determined patterns of movements around the home range. Pit dwellings were arranged in clusters, and included 'long houses' for the communal occupation by several families at the same time. Adaptations to differing regional climates, topographies and ecologies emerged from variations in the patterns of movements around the territory, and in the depth and size of the excavation and construction.

With appropriate planning and design, Olympic urban development has the potential to leave positive environmental legacies to the host city and contribute to environmental sustainability.

This book explains how a modern Olympic games can successfully develop a more sustainable design approach by learning from the lessons of the past and by taking account of the latest developments. It offers an assessment tool that can be tailored to individual circumstances – a tool which emerges from the analysis of previous summer games host cities and from techniques in environmental analysis and assessment.
